BIOGRAPHY OF
GENERAL CHHATRA MAN SINGH GURUNG
CHIEF OF THE ARMY STAFF
NEPALESE ARMY

Born on 18th July 1952 in Pulimarang village of Tanahu district, General Chhatra man Singh Gurung joined the Nepalese Army in the year 1971 and received his commission from the Indian Military Academy. A graduate of Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, USA, he is an alumnus of National Defense University, China. He holds a Bachelors degree from Tribhuvan University and is highly decorated Military Officer. He was promoted to the Rank of General and appointed as the Chief of the Army Staff of the reputed Nepalese Army by the Right Honourable president Dr Ram Baran Yadav on 09th September 2009. He was also conferred the Honorary Rank of “General of the Indian Army” by Her Excellency, the President of India on 14th December 2009.
During his military career, he has undertaken several military professional courses at home and abroad. Besides career courses, he specializes in Mountain Warfare and Para Basic Course from Nepal; and Commando, Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare, Junior Command, and Senior Command Courses from India.
General Gurung has held various Command and Staff responsibilities during his career. He successfully commanded the Gorakh Box Independent Infantry Company and the Shamsher Dal Infantry Battalion, He has earned himself a reputation as a training strategist, which is reflected by his assignments as instructor at the various Army level Training Institutions. Upon his promotion as a Brigadier General, he was appointed as the Brigade Commander of the only Special Forces Brigade and then went on to command an Infantry Brigade. As a Divisional Commander, General Gurung successfully planned and led the counter insurgency operations in the volatile Mid-Western region of Nepal. His important staff appointments include Director of Research and Development and Director of Military Training in the Army HQ. He also served as Quarter Master General. As a Lieutenant General he served as the Chief of the General Staff of the Nepalese Army.
General Gurung has vast experience in the foreign sectors working with the United Nations and the diplomatic corps. He served as the Operations Staff Officer, Chief Military Personnel Officer, and Chief of Staff in UNIFIL HQ, Lebanon. He also holds the distinction of serving as the Military Attaché of Nepal to the United Kingdom and France. He has also participated widely in national and international conferences and seminars at senior level. General Gurung paid visit to the Republic of India and United Kingdom on the official invitation of his counterparts after taking over as the Chief of the Army Staff.
General Gurung is a known physical fitness enthusiast. He is a World Taekwon-Do Federation black belt himself. He is married to Mrs Kamala Gurung and is blessed with two sons, Dr Pratik and Prabal.

महारथी गुरुङ्गले सेवा प्रवेश गरेदेखिनै स्वदेश तथा विदेशमा सरिक भएका विभिन्न पेशागत तालिमहरुमा उत्कृष्टता हासिल गर्दै आउनु भएको छ । नेपाली सेनाको अधिकृत पदपूर्तिको लागि २०२८ सालमा दरखास्त आव्हान भए अनुरुप खुल्ला प्रतियोगितामा उत्कृष्ट स्थान हासिल गरेका गुरुङ्गलाई २ वर्षअवधिको आधारभूत तालिमका निमित्त भारतको देहरादुन स्थित Indian Military Academy (IMA) मा प ठाईए कोमा सफलतापू र् वक तालिम पूरा गरेपछि सहायक सेनानी ( Second Lieutenant ) दर्जाबाट सेवा प्रारम्भ गर्नु भयो । तत्पश्चात उहाँले स्वदेश र विदेशमा विभिन्न पेशागत तालिमहरु गर्नु भयो । स्वदेशमा Para Troopers Basic Course, Tactics and Administration Course, Mountain Warfare (Basic and Advance) Course, Battalion Commander Course आदि तथा भारतमा Commando सहित Infantry Young Officers Course, Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare Course, Battalion Support Weapon Course, Junior Command Course तथा Senior Command Course सवैमा शिक्षक योग्य कक्षा ( Instructor Grading ) प्राप्त गर्नु भएको छ । अमेरिकाबाट US Army Command and General Staff College गर्नु भएका महारथी गुरुङ्गले Excellent नतिजा हासिल गर्नु भएको छ भने चीनको National Defense University बाट सेनाकै उच्च तहको अध्ययन Strategic Studies on National Defence पूरा गर्नु भएको छ । त्यस्तै, महारथी गुरुङ्गसंग स्वदेश तथा विदेशमा विभिन्न सेमिनारहरुमा सहभागी भएको अनुभव पनि छन् । International Terrorism ( नेपाल), International Security Situation After 9/11 ( चीन), US/Nepal Military Law Exchange ( नेपाल), Pacific Armies Management Seminar ( दक्षिण कोरिया ), Symposium on East Asia Security ( हवाई, टोक्यो, दक्षिण कोरिया, चीन, फिलिपिन्स), Pacific Area Senior Officers Logistics Seminar ( न्यूजिल्याण्ड) र Chiefs of Defence (CHOD) Conference ( हवाई) ।
लामो सेवा अवधिमा महारथी गुरुङ्गले विभिन्न तहमा सफल कमाण्ड ( Successful Command ) पनि गर्नु भएको छ । सेनानी ( Major ) हुंदा तत्कालीन गोरखवक्स अनाश्रति गुल्म ( Independent Company ) कमाण्डमा त्यसबेला बर्षरी हुने र्सवाङ्गीण पेशागत प्रतियोगितामा भागलिने ३४ वटा गुल्महरु मध्ये एकै बर्षा “ प्रथम ” बनाउन सफल हुनु भएको थियो । हाल सो गुल्म गण ( Battalion ) भै सकेको छ । प्रमुख सेनानी ( Lieutenant Colonel ) हुंदा गण कमाण्ड ( Battalion Command ) गर्दा पनि १८ वटा गणहरु विचको र्सवाङ्गीण पेशागत प्रतियोगितामा २ बर्षप्रकृति संरक्षण डिउटीबाट फर्केको गणलाई २ बर्षमै “ दोस्रो ” स्थानमा पुर्याउन सफल हुनु भएको थियो । सहायक रथी ( Brigadier General ) हुंदा उहांले पदिक बाहिनी ( Infantry Brigade ) र विशेष बाहिनी ( Special Forces Brigade ) सफलतापू र् वक कमाण्ड गर्नु भयो । प्रधान सेनापति नियुक्ति हुनु भन्दा अगाडि उहांको कमाण्ड चाही द्वन्द उत्कर्षमा पुगेको समयमा त्यसबेलाकै सबैभन्दा सम्वेदनशील तथा महत्वप ू र्ण मानिने क्षेत्र मध्य - पश्चिम पृतनापति (Mid West Division Commander) थियो र त्यसबेला सबभन्दा लामो समयसम्मको सफल कमाण्डपछि उहांको जंगी अड्डामा सरुवा भएको थियो ।
महारथी गुरुङ्गले विभिन्न समयमा विभिन्न तहमा स्टाफ जिम्मेवारीहरु (Staff Appointments) पनि सहृानीय ढंगबाट वहन गर्दै आउनु भएको छ, जसमध्ये सैनिक विनय निर्देशक ( Director of Military Training ), अनुसन्धान र विस्तार निर्देशक ( Director of Research and Development ), प्रवन्धरथी ( Quarter Master General ) बलाधिकृत ( Chief of General Staff ) तथा बलाध्यक्ष विभाग ( Chief of Staff ) आदि ।
महारथी गुरुङ्गमा विदेश सेवाहरुको पनि पर्याप्त अनुभवहरु छन् । उहांले United Nation Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) HQ मा Operations Staff Officer, Chief Military Personnel Officer र अन्तमा UNIFIL को Chief of Staff जस्तो गहन तथा महत्वपू र्ण जिम्मेवारी सफलताप ू र्वक सम्पादन गरी “Outstanding” Overall Rating ( कक्षा) लिएर आउनु भएको छ । त्यसैगरी Diplomatic Field मा London स्थित नेपाली दूतावासमा ३ बर्षअवधिका निमित्त संयुक्त अधिराज्य बेलायत तथा फ्रा न्सको लागि लागि सैनिक सहचारी ( Military Attache ) को कार्यभार पनि प्रशंसनीय ढंगबाट सम्पादन गर्नु भएको थियो ।
महारथी गुरुङ्ग कुनै नयां ठाउं, गाउंमा भ्याएसम्म पैदल यात्रा नै गर्न रुचाउनु हुन्छ र शारिरीक तन्दुरुस्ती ( Fitness ) को निमित्त नियमित रुपमा व्यायम गर्नुहुन्छ । उहाँ प्रायः सबै खेलहरु खेल्नु हुन्छ तर Martial Arts चाही विशेष मनपर्ने खेल हो । उहां राष्ट्रिय खेलकुद परिषदबाट तालिम प्राप्त तथा The World Tae Kwan Do Federation बाट Black Belt पनि हुनुहुन्छ ।
महारथी गुरुङ्गको विचारमा नेपाल एउटा विविध धर्म, जाति, भाषा, संस्कृति, परम्परा, मूल्य र मान्यता अटाएको देश भएकोले हामी सबैले एकले अर्काको अस्तित्वलाई स्वीकार्ने, सम्मान र सहयोग गरेर शान्तिपू र् ण तथा सौहाद्रपू र्ण वातावरणमा देशलाई समृद्ध वनाउनु पर्दछ ।
