Commandant Biography


Col Prakash Thapa , psc joined the Nepali Army as an Officer Cadet in the year 1990 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant to the Shreenath Battalion in May 1992. He assumed the command of the High Altitude and Mountain Warfare School in September 2018.

His military education includes High Altitude and Mountain Warfare Basic and Advance Course, Company Commander and Staff Course among others. He is a graduate of Army Command and Staff College, Shivapuri Nepal. In addition to the basic and other various adventurous military courses he has also attended the Senior Civil Staff Officers Course at Civil Staff College, Jawalakhel Kathmandu.

Colonel Prakash Thapa, in his career span of twenty nine years has served in all the diverse terrains of the country and has actively participated in mountain warfare activities. Col Thapa has successfully commanded independent Infantry Company as well as an Infantry Battalion on 2007 and 2011 respectively. He also has held the staff appointments in Army HQ, the key appointments of Operation Officer (Ops) of an Infantry Brigade and all the staff appointments in the Battalion. In addition, he has held the Instructor appointments in the Nepali Army Military Academy, Intelligence School, High Altitude and Mountain Warfare School and Infantry school as Commando Instructor for Armed Forces of Nepal.

His has served in various UN missions that include United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, as a Platoon commander in 1999, MONUC as COO in a infantry battalion, UNAMID (as an Observer), UNIFIL as Sector Staff Officer (G5 Chief) second time in his career in Lebanon and UNMISS, as a senior military liaison officer in 2017-18. He has been decorated with various medals and decorations which includes Deergha Sewa Padak & COAS commendation medal for his meritorious services in the Army.

Col Thapa had holds Nepal Army record of summiting THORANG Peak (Height, 20200 fit) for the first time as Major rank in 2004. He enjoys playing various games, trekking and has proficient in martial arts TEAKWANDO (Black Belt).

He is married to Maya Magar and they are blessed with two sons, Praman and Mahip Thapa.
