President conferred the Honorary Rank of General of the Nepalese Army on Indian Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh

The President of Nepal, Rt. Honourable Dr. Ram Baran Yadav conferred the Honorary Rank of General of the Nepalese Army on Indian Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Dalbir Singh at a special Investiture Ceremony at Rastrapati Bhawan, Shital Niwas in Kathmandu on November 13, 2014. Visiting General Dalbir Singh was presented with a sword, insignia and a certificate of conferment order by the President during the function. The Nepalese and the Indian armies traditionally honour each other's Chiefs by conferring the Honorary Rank of General in view of the close military ties shared by the two neighbours since decades. COAS General Gaurav SJB Rana, Nepalese Army, was similarly conferred the Honorary Rank of General of the Indian Army by President Shri Pranab Mukherjee in January 8, 2013. Likewise, the last Indian Army Chief to be invested with the title was General Bikram Singh in July 11, 2011. Vice President Mr. Pramanand Jha, Prime Minister and Defence Minister Mr. Sushil Koirala, government ministers, COAS Gen Rana including other high-ranking officials were also present during the investiture ceremony held at Shital Niwas. This long-held tradition is emblematic of the close ties between the national armies of Nepal and India. General Dalbir Singh in his distinguished military career, spanning four decades, has tenanted critical Command, Staff and Instructional appointments at various levels of the Army. The General is highly decorated and has won many accolades like the Param Vishisht Seva Medal along with many other decorations. Prior to the investiture ceremony, the Indian Army Chief had paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister and Defence Minister Mr. Sushil Koirala at latter's office in Singhadurbar after his inspection visit to Birendra Peace Operations Training Centre (BPOTC), Panchkhal the same morning. General Dalbir Singh, who was on a four-day visit at the official invitation extended by COAS Gen Rana, had laid a wreath to pay homage to the fallen at Army Pavilion, Tudhikhel upon his arrival on November 12. Visiting Gen Dalbir Singh was accorded a guard of honour at Army HQs before he met his Nepalese Counterpart Gen Rana at latter's office the same day. During his stay, Gen Dalbir Singh had also visited Nepalese Army's Mountain Warfare School based in Mustang and Western Division HQs in Pokhara apart from visiting the Indian Army Pension Camp based in Pokhara on November 14, 2014. The Indian Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh returned home after successfully completing the official visit on November 15, 2014. The visit has helped to further cement the friendship between two neighbouring countries besides rendering the long-held tradition of conferring the Honorary Rank of General by respective head of the state.
