Operation ‘Sankat Mochan’ continues

<p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The massive earthquake of Richter Scale 7.6 hit the Warpak region of Gorkha district on April 25, 2015. It was the violent type of earthquake with Mercalli Intensity&nbsp;of IX. It has killed more than 8567 and injured 17866 people. It also have destroyed more than 7,44,749 houses all over the country and has left 3,10,000 people homeless.</p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Another temblor of magnitude 6.8 shook the country on May 12 with the epicentre at Kodari, Dolkha. The aftershock killed 96 people and injured more than 1,000 people all over the country. It destroyed the houses that were weakened from the April 25 earthquake.</p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><img src="http://www.nepalarmy.mil.np/newsimages/sankatmochan/Most_affected_areas_with_zip.jpg" width="742" height="559"></p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><img src="http://www.nepalarmy.mil.np/newsimages/sankatmochan/Picture8.jpg" width="200" height="150" class="imgbox1" style="margin-right: 10px; margin-left: 10px;">The earthquake triggered an avalanche in the Everest Region which killed 19 people, making it the deadliest day on the mountain. Later on the same day, another huge avalanche occurred in the Langtang Valley swiping the entire valley except one house behind the rock. 128 bodies have been recovered and more than 400 are missing which included the local, foreigners and Nepalese Army personnel. NA Disaster Assistance Rescue Team (DART) team has reached the valley on April 27 and recovered 118 bodies but 2 bodies were swept away by the recurring sludge of snow and stones.</p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Nepalese Army (NA) was immediately mobilized by the government after the mega-earthquake. The NA along with other security agencies had mobilized most of its troops to the hard-hit 14 districts and other severely damaged surrounding districts. The Army HQ had directed its formations, units and subunits to take necessary action for Search and Rescue operations.</p><p class="imgbox2" style="margin-left: 10px; color: rgb(51, 51, 51); line-height: 20px; text-align: justify;"><img src="http://www.nepalarmy.mil.np/newsimages/sankatmochan/Picture7.jpg" width="372" height="256">&nbsp;</p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">But with the days passed by, the focus has shifted to the distribution of relief materials to the affected people. The Nepalese Army rescued 554 persons &amp; recovered 47 dead bodies from collapsed structures in first 72 hours which accounted for 41% of live rescues by NA. In the next day, further 306 persons (22%) were rescued. Altogether 1336 people were rescued alive and 357 dead bodies were recovered. Till May 11, NA has been deployed to 546 locations for the rescue and relief operations in the affected areas.</p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The search, rescue and relief operation has been further intensified through number of support teams from over 30 various friendly foreign countries in close coordination and cooperation with the NA via the Multi-National Military Coordination Centre (MNMCC). During the first 12 hours, India was the first country to react to the call for international support which was followed by other countries. The medical teams from various friendly countries treated 20,188 people in various locations of the affected districts.</p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"><img src="http://www.nepalarmy.mil.np/newsimages/sankatmochan/combo11.jpg" width="597" height="393"></p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Likewise, the friendly countries provided their air support initially for the SAR operations followed by the transportation of the relief materials. These collapsed structures have not only obstructed the roads and passages but also have created environmental hazards. The dust and dirt that comes from these structures have impacted the people living nearby. To minimize the environmental danger and open the roads for smooth transportation, NA have mobilized its team to various part of the valley. The debris of collapsed structures in Sundhara, Basantapur, Balaju, Gongabu, Patan, Bhaktpur etc. were collected using the NA’s excavators, loaders and backhoes.</p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The international nations have provided 3835 tonnes of relief materials including tents, generators, blankets, food, tarpaulin, mineral water and medicine. These items were collected at the warehouse in Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu and then delivered to various districts. The relief materials were then disseminated under the guidance of the Chief District Officer (CDO) of the concerned district. A total of 17 water tankers were used for 72 hours which consisted of 14 NA and 3 civil water tankers. But later it was reduced to 14 NA tankers which distributed 43,42,000 ltrs of water to the general public.</p><p class="newstxt" style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); margin-right: 30px; margin-left: 20px; text-align: justify; line-height: 20px; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The massive earthquake not only killed thousands of people but injured ten thousands of people. The medical team of NA and other friendly forces treated those injured people in the hospitals, field hospitals and medical outposts.
