COAS Open Marathon-2019 with the theme "UNITED WE STAND-COME STAND WITH US" concluded on March 02, 2019 at NA Football Ground, Bhardakali. Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Purna Chandra Thapa was the chief guest of the opening ceremony.
The event was organized on the occasion of Maha-Shivaratri and Army Day. The event featured 12 categories; full marathon (42.195km) for male, open half marathon (21 km) for male and female, half marathon (21 km) for male and female above 45 years age category, 10 km run for military attaché and diplomats in male and female category, 10 km run for Nepali Army (NA) officers in male and female category, 5 km race for school boys’ and girls’ and 5 km walkathon for civil servant, NA, Nepal police, APF and others.
In 5 km school boys' category, Ishwor Chandra Basnet of Sainik Awashiya Mahabidhyalaya Sallaghari, Bhupraj Puri of Shanti Bidhya Niketan and Bikash Gurung of Sainik Awashiya Mahabidhyalaya Sallaghari stood first, second and third respectively. Likewise, in the 5 km school girls' event, Kajal Bista, Kushalta Tamang and Swechchha Balami of Bijeshwori Gyan Mandir stood first, second and third respectively.
In 10 km race for military attaché and diplomats in male category, Mr. Shashank Shekhar of Indian Embassy, He Mr. Richard Morris of UK Embassy and Mr R. Durai Murugan of Indian Embassy claimed top three spots respectively. Similarly, in the Nepali Army Officers' 10 km race male category, Captain Bishal Chandra Baji, Major Madhu Thapa and Major Nawaraj Thapa finished in top three respectively. Likewise, in the Nepali Army Officers' 10 km race female category, Major Rajani Adhikari, Captain Sanjeeta KC and Captain Pabitra Adhikari came first, second and third respectively.
Likewise, in half marathon (male category), WO2 Kalyan Baniya, Pte. Gajendra Rai and Cpl. Tika Katwal of NA clinched the top three positions respectively. Similarly in half marathon (female category), Cpl. Bishwo Rupa Buda of NA, Binda Desha of APF and Pte. Chandra Rawat of NA secured top three positions respectively. Top three athletes in open half marathon received Rs 50,000, 35,000 and 25,000 respectively. Similarly, in half marathon for male above 45 years category, Dharma Maharjan, Bhim Gurung and Bhimsen Awale grabbed the top three positions and received Rs 40,000 Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively.
Krishna Basnet of NA clocked 2 hours 20 minutes and 51 second to complete the full marathon in first position while Sgt Rajan Khattri of NA grabbed second position with the timing of 2 hours 24 minutes and 00 seconds. L/Cpl. Nawaraj Saud of NA clocked 2 hours 29 minutes and 57 seconds to finish third.
Gen Purna Chandra Thapa awarded a shield, medal and a cheque board of Rs. 1,25,000 to WO2 Krishna Basnet, the winner of the open full marathon, Rs 65,000 to the first runner-up Sgt Rajan Khattri and Rs 35,000 to the second runner-up L/Cpl. Nawaraj Saud. M.D. Shekhar Golchha awarded replica key of Pulsar Motorcycle sponsored by Golchha Organizatino to WO2 Basnet.
Ambassador of UK to Nepal, General officers of NA, high ranking officials of sister security organizations, members of Nepal Olympic Committee, representatives of All Nepal Football Association, The Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, banks, media personnel, officers from the offices of defence attachés, officers of NA and students were present during the event.
