Amid the Constitution day & National Day, on September 21, 2018, Nepali Army (NA) launched a massive tree plantation campaign to compensate the trees chopped down during the construction of Kathmandu-Terai/Madhesh Expressway. A total of 5000 saplings were planted in an area of 6.61 hectares of Kolhawi municipality-8, Shanti Tole. Similarly, about 3000 self-grown Sal and other species were also planted during the campaign.
As per an agreement between the Department of Forest & Land-Conservation, and the Fast Track Project, the Nepali Army has a target to plant a total of five lakh (5,00,000) saplings with a ratio of 25 new plants to one chopped tree. To date, 17949 trees have already been cleared and 2000 more trees are to be chopped shortly during the construction of bridges and tunnels along the expressway.
Nepal Army has already produced 150 thousand saplings of various species in Nijgadh, Bara and Rajdamar, Makwanpur.
A joint team of stakeholders has already identified and surveyed 188 hectares of vacant land in different community and national forest areas of Nijgadh and Kolhawi municipality in Bara District for the tree plantation.
Chief District Officer of Bara, local representatives, all ranks of Nepali Army, high ranking officers of sister security organizations, concerned stakeholders, media personnel and locals were present during the campaign.
